Words| Peel Me Back

By Moses Gitonga

Peel me back,
What do you think you’ll find?

Will these bones be as flawless as make-up might make you believe my skin to be?
Or do these scars run bone deep?
I appreciate the sentiment but I am no King,
I am a slave whose amnesia made him oblivious of who, what he really is,
So please…

Allow me to shed these layers that shade my insecurities from glares of piercing eyes,
Layers we wear better than the designer clothes that hang in closets,
But, unlike those clothes,
These layers are forever on me

So if you peeled me back,
What do you think you’ll find?

What if I told you I struggle to find words?

Seeing how speaking is how I choose to make a living,
Me struggling to find words doesn’t provide much job security, does it?
Sometimes I choose to remain silent, afraid that they might not get the words I choose,
But it’s funny how the silence itself is often misunderstood

What if I told you I hate crowds?

Yet I expect to sell out every stage I grace,
Me hating crowds doesn’t leave much room for a following, does it?

What if I told you I have no idea what I’m doing?

That would probably justify what my parent tells me,
Seeing how I do not want to give her that kind of satisfaction, as far as she’s concerned,
I know exactly what I’m doing

What if I told you the truth?

What I feel, what I don’t feel,
What I think of you,
What I think of me,
If my heart was left exposed on my sleeve,
Would you dance to its beats?
Or would you leave me hanging?
Strung up high dangling from the pedestal I sometimes put myself on

What if we could share and be free?
Free from the fear of what it might lead them to think of you, of me,
Free from judgment,
Free from assumptions,
Free from all things that make opening up too costly,
Peace…

Feel free,
Pay me no mind,
Peel me back,
Let me know what you find.
